“…I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life for I perceive, at last, that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I no longer am fooled by the garments they wear for mine eyes are open. I look beyond the cloth and I am not deceived. I am nature’s greatest miracle.” ~ Og Mandino
(This is Part 1 of the study of the MKMMA class assignment see Week 22 MKMMA – Change begins with our Lenses – for Part 2)
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers and sisters have been asked by the world class educators of the MKMMA a very interesting and life changing question. It is the type of question which demands you look in and think of what it is to “know thyself”. We have wrestled with it, thought about it and put it through a true Mastermind
The question is simple yet like all great questions it is the deep expression generated which fires the spirit to soar and take flight. I mean what’s stopping you? What keeps you in the comfort zone of the life you are living? Not allowing you to break free and take the risk for the life you want.
That “Comfort Zone” has been set up by the best mind (YOURS !!!) to keep you SAFE and able to live the life YOU REALLY would rather NOT HAVE. What are these Barricades that keep you SAFE? What are these experiences which reinforce and compel us to stay in the “Zone” and then gives us the life we would rather NOT HAVE. These strong emotions of Fear, Hurt Feelings, Anger, Guilt and/or Unworthiness are designed for just that. Making sure we do not stray to far off the reservation and stay comfortably NUMB.
Some people with an open mind have found a way to use these emotions not as a barricade to keep them SAFE and in the LIFE they would rather NOT HAVE, but as a way to launch into the life they always wanted!!! You would like to see that Aladdin’s Lamp, RIGHT?!?
Well that is the question we were asked. And now the following is my own thoughts and prose as to what we have talked, thought, cried and even got angry about. Nevertheless in the end we were all GRATEFUL for the insight and courage it laid at our feet. As I wrote I find myself duty bound to give the reader an in depth survey even though the content was fast approaching a circular in length. For this cause; to keep the study at a sensible length and leave time for pause and contemplation, please find the reading broken into two parts. Let us begin with Part 1
I am a tool man. If there is a project where I found myself building or fixing something one of my rules of thumb is “the perfect tool” for the job makes it all go a lot easier. Sometimes the perfect tool is found at the store or in a catalog even before you begin. Someone has told you about it or it comes with the instructions. There is nothing like it!! When you use it for your task it makes the work seem effortless and your time effective and efficient. However more times than not a tool comes about not because of the planning or how well the instructions were followed but from a conviction to finish the task. At these times tools were created from the matter or materials which were lying around. By the creative thought of a mind, a paper clip becomes a long a narrow extension to reach into a small hole to pull out a magnet, a quarter becomes a screwdriver. It was always amazing to me that time after time when the conviction to finish the task was present the mechanism or tools would always present themselves.
In this way a formula is at hand by which we understand how these “tools” can and will give us the power needed to launch and hold velocity.
Conviction and Tools amount to what comes about
Ok I know you are saying to yourself “so what?” That doesn’t seem so special. Let me suggest that at this moment it is only information in your objective or conscious mind. You must make the formula part of your heart:
Let it become counsel in your subjective / subconscious mind, for then it too has the power of Aladdin’s lamp. You must bring the thought into your play, wrestle and meditate with it on a daily basis.
Let’s begin that process by defining the pieces of the formula:
Conviction: Dictionaries usually define conviction as a fixed or strong belief. Conviction is really much more than that. Your convictions include your values, commitments and motivations. Our convictions determine our conduct. They motivate us to take a stand and to act according to our values.
Tools: A tool is any physical item that can be used to achieve a goal, especially if the item is not consumed in the process. Informally the word is also used to describe a procedure or process with a specific purpose. A tool is then simply a vehicle or way to accomplish something-it is the “how-to.”
Comes About: To take place; happen. It will come about after combining a conviction and a tool.
Suppose that your conviction always equaled what comes about or…. how about I put this forward; THAT IS THE WAY IT ALREADY IS!!! Your conviction always equals what comes about.
Imagine being on one side of a football field and I told you to go back and forth across the field 100 times but each time you do I insist that you travel in a different way. Perhaps you walk across and then crawl back. That’s two. Then you swim across and can’t think of a way back. Now imagine that the swimming, crawling, and walking were all “tools”. Before we go any further I want to clarify a point about the theory. What is your conviction? Is it is to keep crossing the field? How would you know that, simply because I told you to? I submit that you cannot tell a person’s true conviction by what someone else tells them to do. You might go through the motions but are you totally committed to the goal? The results are you fall short of the goal because it was not your conviction. I am going to suggest you cannot even tell what a person’s conviction is by what they tell you they are committed to. Some people say their conviction is to have a happy marriage and yet “they are constantly trying to prove which of them is wrong.” It is their true conviction to be right – not to be happy. They definitely want a happy marriage but it is not their true conviction that is simply a wish or a want. We know this because they are not taking risks in any way. The true conviction is much deeper, stronger, focused. A person’s true conviction is often hidden from himself or herself.
What I am advancing is that the only way you can tell a person’s true conviction is by what comes about. I am suggesting that your convictions and what comes about are always one and the same. You cannot have conviction without it coming about. How many people do we know who set a New Year’s resolutions last year and not reach them? This theory is saying it was not their “true” conviction to keep those resolutions. Their true, deeper, driving conviction was for something else. Perhaps it was to be comfortable, or right about why something couldn’t be done, or to look good to your peers. Now back to the football field remember you were stuck? Well let’s say I up the ante and add bleachers which are full of people that are cheering you on and are getting louder about it! Well I believe as you stand there, seemingly out of the blue, an idea of how you can get across will come upon you. Amazing isn’t it, well yes and no. We used a scientific principle of the mind. When the conviction is clear, intense, and emotional, a tool will always appear. In this scenario, a voice inside your head (actually the subconscious) said something like, “I am not going to stand here like a fool. Come up with a way and come up with it NOW!” And the subconscious responds with an idea for a new tool. This is why we watch Professional sports and cheer them on with such gusto. Our emotions impact the players and put their convictions into a super charged emotional state and then the big play occurs. One that is for the records book!
This is priceless, do not miss it… You do not have to know what to do, that is know the tool.
You do have to have an incredibly emotional and clear conviction. The conviction always comes before the tool and true conviction and emotional commitment will always create the tool.
Well the question begs itself then, Are you getting something other than you want? And how do we find and hold onto this Aladdin’s Lamp? Suppose that the formula that I have begun to talk about could produce for you anything that you wanted? You would be excited wouldn’t you? I am excited about this formula and would not trade it for any amount of money. Because it holds the recipe for making a delicious and successful life. A few ingredients are waiting. Here is one of the topics in the next blog.
